The Washington Association of New Jersey, founded in 1874, is one of the oldest historic preservation organizations in the nation. WANJ's mission is to preserve and maintain the Jacob Ford Mansion, known as Washington's Headquarters, in Morristown. Gen. George Washington and the Continental Army wintered in Morristown in 1779-80.
Created in 1933, through donations by the Washington Association, Morristown National Historical Park preserves sites in the Morristown area occupied by Gen. Washington and the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. It was the first national historical park in the nation.
