History
MOCEANS Center for Independent Living, Inc., [(previously known as Monmouth-Ocean Independent Living Center and MOCEANS Independent Living Center, (MOCEANS)] is a grassroots, consumer-driven, and consumer-controlled organization where people with disabilities, their families, friends and the community at-large can go to learn about available options that will help them choose how they will live, work, and enjoy life in their community. Prior to MOCEANS CIL becoming its own free-standing non-profit organization in 1989, it was a project of the Consumer Advisory Council on the Disabled, (CACOD, Inc) for 12 years. In the summer of 1995, NJDVRS in compliance with Title VII of the Rehabilitation Act of 1992, mandated that CACOD, Inc. and MOCEANS ILC separate. In April of 1996, MOCEANS CIL was incorporated and in April 1997, MOCEANS received its 501(C) 3 nonprofit status from the Internal Revenue Service.
