The Orleans Levee District is responsible for the protection of life and property by providing constructing, operating and maintaining the Mississippi River and Hurricane Protection Flood Control Systems. It is also responsible for offering safe and secure facilities for aviation, marine and recreational activities. The Orleans Levee District provides repair and maintenance services for more than 125 miles of levees and floodwalls, over 185 floodgates, embankments, seawalls, jetties, breakwaters, and other hurricane and flood protection improvements. The district also operates finance and engineering departments. The Orleans Levee District and the United States Corps of Engineers participate in several joint flood protection projects relative to the Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity Hurricane Protection Plan.
