Department of Geology operates under the University of Georgia, and provides various graduate and undergraduate programs. Its academic curriculum includes environmental geoscience, earth processes and environments, earth's history of global change, physical geology, surficial and near-surficial processes, elementary oceanography, volcanoes of the Puna Plateau, exploration of the moon and geology of the national parks. The department offers Geology Field School and Geophysics Field School, and organizes field trip training programs pertaining to geology, anthropology and ecology. It includes project development on tertiary volcanism and ore deposition. Its research program includes archaeological geology, clay mineralogy, economic geology, geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, igneous and metamorphic petrology, coastal studies and marine geology, micropaleontology, mineralogy and sedimentology.
