Founded in 1903, the California Department of Social Services provides aid and protection to children and adults. The department is comprised of more than 4,200 employees and is operated by the State of California. Its adult programs division specializes in in-home supportive and cash assistance services for adults and immigrants. The California Department of Social Services also operates a children and family services division that offers foster care, child welfare and adoption-related solutions. The department administers refugee, food stamps and child abuse prevention programs. In addition, it works with various retirement communities, residential care facilities and adoption agencies. The department supports the CalWORKs Child Care Program, which serves children in more than 55 counties in California. The California Department of Social Services additionally administers the California Tribal TANF Program.
