Founded in 1963, the California Department of Rehabilitation administers one of the largest vocational rehabilitation programs in the United States. It offers consulting and counseling services for individuals with developmental disabilities. The department provides advocacy services in the areas of legal affairs, civil rights, legislation and auditing. It offers a business enterprises program for individuals with hearing and visual impairments. The department provides financial management, accounting, fiscal forecasting, database administration, management resource, planning analysis, staff development and technical support services. It additionally offers independent and assisted living services. The department employs more than 1,900 staff members and serves over 120,000 consumers annually. The California Department of Rehabilitation maintains one of its locations in Santa Barbara, Calif.
