Andrew Ries, MD, MPH serves as associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs for UC San Diego Health Sciences. He has directed UC San Diego's pulmonary rehabilitation program for over 30 years, promoting pulmonary rehabilitation as a standard of care for patients with disabling lung disease. Dr. Ries has been widely recognized as a leader in lung health and for his extensive experience in medical research directed toward improving the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic lung diseases. The American Lung Association in California recognized his commitment to lung health with its 2014 Lung Health Award. He is a long -standing volunteer for the American Lung Association and American Thoracic Society, as well as other professional organizations and government agencies including the American College of Chest Physicians, American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He has co -authored numerous publications and several books, including three editions of Shortness of Breath A Guide to Better Living and Breathing, and three editions of the Manual of Clinical Problems in Pulmonary Medicine. He completed his fellowship at UC San Diego and his residency training in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York. He is board certified in in pulmonary medicine.
