The Birmingham VA Medical Center is a 310-plus-bed acute tertiary care facility that offers a range of health care services. The center performs several surgical procedures. It offers medical solutions in the areas of cardiology, ophthalmology, orthopedics and urology. The Birmingham VA Medical Center operates more than five community-based outpatient clinics in northern Alabama. The center also offers palliative care services to meet the emotional, physical, social and spiritual needs of individuals. It administers the Substance Abuse Treatment Program (SATP). The Birmingham VA Medical Center operates the Southeastern Blind Rehabilitation Center, which is a 30-plus-bed facility. The center is operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
