The Cordero Rojo Mine features deposits of subbituminous coal. It explores more than 60 million tons of coal every year. The mine sells products to various electric utilities in the southern and western United States. It maintains a staff of over 540 employees. Cordero Rojo Mine is a recipient of the Sentinels of Safety Award from the Department of Labor. It is a part of Rio Tinto Energy America, which is one of the leading miners and processors of mineral resources in the world. Rio Tinto Energy America operates various coal mines in Wyoming and Montana, as well as employs nearly 1,500 individuals.
