Big Piney in Pinedale, Wyoming is home to the recently completed Dry Piney Wildlife Crossing Project, a collaborative effort between the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and the Wyoming Department of Transportation. This project, which included the construction of nine underpasses and 17 miles of fencing, aims to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions by encouraging big game animals, such as mule deer and pronghorn, to use the underpasses. With one of the highest wildlife-vehicle collision rates in Wyoming, this project serves as a crucial initiative to protect the local wildlife and enhance motorist safety.
The Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest is also actively involved in the Monument Ridge Vegetation and Recreation Management Project. This multifaceted project focuses on fuel reduction, wildlife habitat enhancement, and safety and access improvements for recreation. As part of this project, a prescribed burn is scheduled for the first week of October 2023 to treat a 2,150-acre area north of the Monument Ridge Lookout and Hoback Guard Station. By implementing a mosaic pattern of burning, this prescribed fire aims to create a mix of different severity levels, ultimately enhancing habitat and promoting forest health in the area.
