Nuttallburg, located in Fayetteville, WV, was a thriving mining town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, playing a significant role in the coal industry. Established by entrepreneur John Nuttall in response to the growing demand for coal, Nuttallburg became known for its smokeless coal, which was shipped to industrial cities across the country. Today, Nuttallburg is a protected historic site and is considered one of the most intact examples of a coal mining complex in West Virginia.

After passing through several owners, the Nuttallburg mines ceased production in 1958, leaving behind a collection of empty buildings and foundations. In 1998, the site was transferred to the National Park Service, which has since worked to preserve and stabilize the structures. With its rich history and well-preserved industrial remains, Nuttallburg offers visitors a glimpse into the coal mining heritage of West Virginia.
