The Inn was constructed during the Civil War era by James A. Brown an attortney and graduate of West Virginia University. Mr. Brown was present in Richmond in 1861 when the South voted to secede from the Union. He, however, voted against secession and returned to help form the state of West Virginia. He fell in love with a beautiful girl from Baltimore, Maryland. They were married and the house was given to Isabelle as a wedding present from her husband.
