The Charleston Fire Department provides firefighting, emergency medical response and rescue services. It has been offering fire protection, prevention, suppression and safety education services since 1845. The Charleston Fire Department operates several fire stations and an inventory of fire handling equipment, including engines, pumpers, tankers, rescue vans, utility trailers, air foam devices and ladders. It responds to various vehicle and water accidents and structure, vehicle, trash, brush, dumpster, electrical and outdoor fires. The department offers the Life Safe program, which focuses on fire drills, evacuation planning, home and workplace safety assessment training for local residents and commercial clients.
