Founded in 1966, the Washington Corrections Center for Women houses more than 150 offenders. It is spread across an area of over 70 acres and features a health clinic, gymnasium, chapel, living units, support facilities, and administration, education and food service buildings. The center provides vocational programs in information technology, technical design and ornamental horticulture through Tacoma Community College. It administers the Prison Pet Partnership Program, which features rehabilitation through the human-animal bond. Its residential parenting program promotes healthy mother-child bonding. The center also administers the Braille Program. It offers chemical dependency counseling, transition planning, tutoring, creative writing and diversity awareness solutions. The Washington Corrections Center for Women is a part of the Department of Corrections.
