History
In 2005, I was approached by a few parents to see if I was interested in starting a drama program for their kids. I was thrilled to have a new challenge, and with input from the kids and their families, we created the Drama Dragons. I started out with only 12 students meeting on Fridays for 2 hours. It became so much fun that I now have several different classes, each up to three hours long, and as many as 30 students at one class.
Specialties
Youth theatre programs help foster creativity, self-esteem, team work, and willingness to try something new. The creative process should be a powerful, positive learning experience for all participants. Drama Dragons Students are ages 8 to 18 years old. We explore dramatic writings by reading many plays, based on literature and history. Students participating in classes learning, theatre games and study activities, work on basic theatre terms; stage direction, blocking, projection, pantomime, improvisation, back-stage etiquette, character study and stage combat. Character Creation is by developing specific movement, emotions, character traits, back stories, vocal work, and internal dialogue of a character. Technical Theatre is the study of how simple terms of set, lights, costumes, and properties impact a production. Some other lessons focus on other forms of theater including mask building, puppetry, script writing, and costume or set design. The ultimate goal is to do public performances for family, friends and other community members. I currently work in the Tacoma and developing new classes to start this fall.
