Applied Physics Laboratory University of Washington, located in Seattle, was formed in 1943 to support the U.S. Navy for World War II defense requirements and focused on the development of torpedo exploders. It also offers comprehensive acoustic studies and oceanographic research programs to study variations of Navy systems in ocean environments. The laboratory offers expertise in coastal and small-scale oceanography and the physics involved in establishing tactical superiority in shallow water environments. Applied Physics Laboratory University of Washington s scientists and engineers also contribute to studies of the Earth's climate cycles, with satellite and in situ-sensing of ocean winds and currents. Its staff also assists in the study of air and sea fluxes and observations of the Arctic Sea s ice bodies and their variations and effects on midlatitude oceans.
