History
The Archives is the dream of area resident Carlton E. Appelo's lifetime interest in local history. Son of a Deep River pioneer family with stores in Deep River, Grays River and Naselle, Carlton Appelo ran the local telephone company for decades. Beginning in the 1960's, he printed local historical supplements in the telephone directories and later began publishing longer books about the area's various small towns separately. In 2000, after decades of collecting and copying local photographs and other materials, Carlton began the complex process of organizing and digitally cataloging the collection. Today the Archives Center has a walk-through museum, local genealogical reference section, and two research libraries. One of which is the Finnish Library with an assortment of books and periodicals to pay tribute to the Finnish Heritage.
