Alternative Elementary II in Seattle, WA, is a unique educational institution that focuses on expeditionary learning and outward bound experiences. Room 6, known as the Sasquatch Designers, is currently engaged in a study of architectural design, specifically libraries, with the aim of redesigning AE II's own library. Through fieldwork and research, the students are exploring the history of public libraries and how architecture can enhance or prevent access, while also enjoying a wide range of books and creating their own class books.
With a special emphasis on understanding access in a broad sense, Room 6 students are developing technical skills in architecture, such as plan views and schematics, to aid in their library design proposals. Alongside their architectural studies, they are immersing themselves in a variety of captivating books, sharing recommendations, and even creating math word problems based on favorite literary contexts. Alternative Elementary II provides a dynamic and engaging learning environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and a love for reading.
