Yorktown Map
Yorktown is a census-designated place (CDP) in York County, Virginia, United States. The population was 220 in the 2000 census. It is the county seat of York County, one of the eight original shires formed in colonial Virginia in 1634.
The town is most famous as the site of the siege and subsequent surrender of General Cornwallis to General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War on October 19, 1781. Though the war would last another year, the British defeat at Yorktown effectively ended the fighting. Yorktown also figured prominently in the American Civil War (1861–1865), serving as a major port to supply both armies, depending on which held Yorktown at the time.
Yorktown today is part of the Historic Triangle of Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg, and is the eastern terminus of the Colonial Parkway. Yorktown is also the eastern end of the TransAmerica Trail, a bicycle touring route designed by the Adventure Cycling Association.
Nearby cities include Poquoson, Williamsburg, Mathews, Hampton, Newport News.
