History
Surf Reston was founded in 2012 by Chris Higgins and his wife Colleen. Long-time surfers and water sport enthusiasts, the Higgins relocated from a beach community to the Washington, DC Metro Region and began enjoying stand-up paddle boarding on Lake Audubon in Reston, Virginia. In 2012, the couple realized that there needed to be a resource available to help those interested in exploring the sport to learn with a focus on safety, technique and fun. In 2013, Chris and Colleen relocated to Colorado where they continue be an integral part of the Stand Up Paddleboard community. They have turned over operations to Steve Gurney, a long-time Reston resident and a Certified Instructor with the Academy of SUP Instructor. In 2014 Surf Reston helped hundreds of local residents enjoy to fun and healthy benefits of SUP. Surf Reston hosted friends, neighbors, birthday and anniversary celebrations. In addition, Surf Reston has brought together a community of SUP enthusiasts to gather and have fun.

The fast-growing sport of stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is a fun, easy way to go play on the water. With a minimum amount of equipment, you can paddle on anything from ocean surf to lakes and rivers!. Surf Reston provides you with an opportunity to learn this fun, family oriented sport in Northern Virginia. Surf Reston sessions are guided by certified instructors with no more than 5 paddlers per instructor. Join us for weekly sessions held on lakes in Reston. Special requests for dates and times are available. In addition to getting you started with an introduction to SUP, Surf Reston has sessions that focus on SUP Yoga, Fitness, Stroke Analysis, we can even coach you and your Dog on how to paddle board together!
