I think I listed the wrong measurements. It is more like an 8" wide by 4" tall notch. (Definitely not less than 1/4 of the size of joist!)

This is the amount of cable width that was needed for my runs. Could have been supported with the 3" Lenox hole saw I purchased for use.

Also could have been supported with the 3" hole saw I purchased for this job.

Notice how they left the romex so that when the repair was done they had to sister further to account for the hole.
