Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute, established in 1968 and located in Falls Church, Va., is a short-term hospital that provides treatment to individuals with acute mental health needs. The institute has five patient care units, and the admissions unit has more than 20 beds. The acute care unit has over 10 beds, and the intermediate care unit more than 20. The psychosocial rehabilitation unit has more than 40 beds. The institute serves individuals between the ages of 18 to 65 who are residents of one of the five community services board districts in Northern Virginia comprising Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax-Falls Church, Loudon and Prince William. All patients participate in treatment planning activities and receive group treatment services. The program options include group psychotherapies, independent living skills training, medication education, stress management, community reintegration and a variety of recreational activities.
