Newport News Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the country. Based in Newport News, Va., the magnificent 8,000 acre oasis is home to an incredible variety of native wildlife, including deer, foxes, otter, raccoon and beaver, to name a few. The park serves campers and outdoor enthusiasts with various facilities, such as retreat for hiking, bicycling on the Park's many trails, picnicking in shelters with outdoor grills, fishing, boating and canoeing on the park's scenic lakes/inlets, sports like archery and golf. In addition, launching ramps are available for privately owned watercraft. For history lovers the park offers the site of some of the preserved Civil War fortifications, earthworks and redoubts in Virginia, and is a designated stop on the official Virginia Civil War Trails network.
