Founded in 1979, National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI, is a nonprofit organization for people who suffer from mental illnesses and their families. It advocates for the public and private policies that facilitate research, end discrimination and promote effective mental health care programs. The organization provides various educational programs, including Family-to-Family, NAMI Connection and Hearts and Minds for consumers, family members, providers and the public. NAMI offers discounts on brochures, videos and promotional items during state and local conferences. It organizes group discussions on mental health-related issues. The organization operates a help line that provides information and referral services. NAMI provide informational resources on topics related to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression.
