Heron Ridge Golf Club opened in the spring of 1999 and was the first new public golf course to open in more than 10 years in Virginia Beach, Va. This Fred Couples/Gene Bates design features 13 of 18 holes with water hazards and natural wetlands. The front nine winds links-style through rolling hills with strategically placed bunkers and water. The back nine shifts the setting to mature stands of oaks, beeches, elms and more water. Heron Ridge's open-to-the-wind links-style quality along with the unique topography of elevation changes, natural depressions and meandering streams provide its players with an uncommon setting for a beach course. The course measures some 7,011 yards from the Boom-Boom (Fred Couples' nickname) Tees. Four other sets of tees on every hole insure that golfers of all skill levels will be put to the test.
