HistoryOver one hundred years ago, the seed of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society was sprouted. Highlights during that time include, 1947 - Incorporation as Rockingham Historical Society 1968 - acquired electric map of Stonewall Jackson's Campaign of 1862, a light and sound presentation of Shenandoah Valley Civil War history 1978 - renamed as Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society 1988 - received significant gift of property and moved offices and library to Dayton, Virginia 1993 - opened first phase of new museum facility as the Shenandoah Valley Folk Art and Heritage Center. 2000 - opened expanded museum facility 2010 - rebranded as The Heritage MuseumSpecialtiesConsidered the Best-Kept Secret in Valley History, The Heritage Museum, home of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society, offers large galleries with exhibits on local heritage, folk art treasures, and Civil War history. An electric map illuminates Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign of 1862. The Genealogy Library provides extensive resources for researchers. The museum facility includes the Cromer-Trumbo House containing the Mary Spitzer Etter Collection of Victorian and early 20th-century household items, toys, and decorative arts.
