In 1980, the first Hard Times Cafe opened on this very site in Old Town Alexandria. Founders Jim and Fred Parker didn’t really know what they were getting into — but they did know how to cook award-winning chili. The rest is history. Step back in time and take in a classic tribute to the west.

Sam's Cafe and Market is exactly what it says it is, and it makes for an interesting yet fun combination of shopping and dining. The market half of the store features imported foods from Iran, including pistachios, honey, cheese and coffee. The restaurant half, nestled cozily to the side, serves up traditional kabobs (salmon and sultani), along with homemade hummus and Baklava for desert. After the meal, head back to the market to grab some homemade gelato.
