The Virginia Department of Transportation, also known as VDOT, is responsible for the building, maintenance and operation of the state's parking lots, roads and tunnels. The department is operated by the government of the state of Virginia. It provides funds for airports, seaports, rail and public transportation systems through the Commonwealth Transportation Board. The department employs a staff of more than 8,300 full-time people. The Virginia Department of Transportation is also responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 12,600 bridges. The department administers the Highway Safety Corridor program, which works to reduce the number of traffic accidents. The Virginia Department of Transportation additionally provides environment preservation programs and online safe driving tips.
