George Washington s Mount Vernon is a historic estate and is owned and maintained by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, a private, nonprofit organization. The estate employs more than 450 employees and consists of over 400 volunteers. Its facility covers a space of more than 8,000 acres and includes gardens, structures, museum, food court, greenhouse and the tombs of George and Martha Washington. The estate operates with the help of funds received from the retail, and dining facilities and ticket sales. It also receives donations from foundations, corporations and individuals. The estate s education center serves as a presidential library with classroom space, computers and more than 20,000 letters written by Washington. George Washington s Mount Vernon also consists of shops that offer gifts, reproductions, jewelry, books and toys. Located in Mt. Vernon, Va., the estate also has an inn that offers dining rooms and regional and colonial cuisine.
