The Division of Mined Land Reclamation is governed by the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy. The division is responsible for the reclamation of land affected by various surface and underground coal mining activities. It reviews applications and issues permits for coal mining operations. The Division of Mined Land Reclamation assists with the investigation of water loss, subsidence and blasting complaints. In addition, the division reclaims abandoned mine land. It annually handles more than 7,000 inspections and over 400 complaint investigations. The Division of Mined Land Reclamation offers compliance assistance to mine operators, engineers and consultants. The division also assists with the development of policies, procedures and guidelines related to re-mining projects.
