Christ United Methodist Church is a thoroughly modern church, complete with an excellent website on which one can hear recent CUMC sermons.
The church emphasizes the social justice aspects of Christianity, and Pastor John Speight can be relied upon to address scripture in a thoughtful, interesting way, and more importantly, to connect the ancient passages to the dilemmas of the present day. For example, a recent service featured a film and discussion about sexual slavery in the modern world; another sermon discussed a socio-anthropological study conducted on the D.C. subway. Following from Christ, Speight's message is that "Our job is to preach the good news to the poor, to release the prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to give voice to the oppressed."
The church features modern music and encourages "come as you are" dress.
Christ United Methodist Church will eventually move to a larger church that will be built on Ox Road. Construction has not broken ground yet.
