History
The Center for Wilderness Safety was originally formed in 2003 as a class project by two Eagle Scouts, Clif Castleman and Phil Gardner - all for a Penn State University outdoor recreation class. In 2005, the two decided to take the company 'live' outside of the university environment, and a newly revised organization was born: the Center for Wilderness Safety. At the beginning, CWS focused primarily on American Red Cross courses until a local Boy Scout troop from Ashburn, Virginia approached them and asked for wilderness first aid training. Since that day, CWS has grown and flourished, training literally thousands of individuals in both American Red Cross and wilderness & remote medicine. Now focusing primarily on wilderness & remote medical training programs such as wilderness first aid and wilderness first responder, CWS maintains its status as an authorized provider of the American Red Cross, and now teaches all across the Mid-Atlantic US.
