Operational since 1938, the Department of Social Services is governed by Augusta County in Virginia. It specializes in the promotion of self-reliance skills and protection of citizens through community-based services. The department administers the Benefits Program, which includes medical, financial, fuel and food assistance for the citizens of Augusta County, as well as the cities of Staunton and Waynesboro in Virginia. It also conducts the Services Program, which offers adult and child protective, foster care and adoption, day care, employment assistance and volunteer payee services. The county additionally manages administration, agricultural development, animal control, finance, personnel, building inspection and information technology departments.
