NEKCA or the Northeast Kingdom Community Action agency is a private nonprofit organization that serves more than 6,000 moderate-to-low income families in Newport, Vt. The organization s community action youth services division serves Orleans and northern Essex counties, and works with youth and families to develop positive life skills through prevention programs and support services. It provides life skills instructions individually and in group settings to youth transitioning from foster care and for youth who are homeless or without help of their legal guardian. The youth are provided living facilities, emotional support, guidance and advocacy, and referral source and coordination of other agency services. NEKCA s runaway program provides intervention services to teens and their parents. The services include short-term alternative living arrangements in an appropriate community.
