The Dugout Canyon Mine is an underground coal mine located approximately 11 miles northeast of Wellington, Utah. This mine, permitted by Canyon Fuel Company, received approval from the Division of Oil, Gas and Mining to begin their mining operation on March 16, 1998 with the approval of the company s mining and reclamation plan. The mine was originally opened as a room and pillar mining operation, with longwall mining beginning in April 2001. The plan for the Dugout Canyon Mine is to produce in excess of 4 million tons of coal per year. The Mine sits within a region of energy resource development, including coal mining, oil and gas production and tar sands development. Canyon Fuel is a subsidiary of Arch Coal, a publicly traded company headquartered in St. Louis.
