Governed by Victoria County in Texas, the Health Department is responsible to improve public health and protect the environment. It works in cooperative and collaborative efforts with several city health departments to prevent and control disease spread and enhance the nutritional status of women and young children. The department also provides dental and health care awareness education services for individuals and families. It operates through various divisions, including diabetes, animal control, environmental and nursing. The Health Department s diabetes division organizes the Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes lesson series, which teaches participants a variety of aspects of diabetes self-management and prevention with its curriculum developed by the Texas Cooperative Extension. It additionally manages an animal shelter that houses a range of dogs and cats available for adoption.
