Byrd Unit is a part of the Correctional Institutions Division, which is governed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The department manages offenders in various prisons, jails and private correctional facilities. Byrd Unit was established in 1964 and spreads across an area of more than 1,400 acres. It houses over 1,300 male offenders and employs nearly 280 staff members. The unit provides ambulatory, medical, dental and mental health services, as well as telemedicine solutions. In addition, Byrd Unit features wheelchair-accommodated cells and administers an adult education program. The unit arranges transportation for offenders and maintains the operations of a wastewater treatment plant. It manages an outside sales warehouse and modular installation projects.
