HistoryThe inspiration for Halo House was a loving husband and father of two who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2009. After unsuccessful treatment, Derek came to see Dr. Nathan Fowler at MD Anderson. Derek's inability to work combined with frequent visits to Houston quickly depleted the family's savings. He tearfully admitted to Dr. Fowler that he was not afraid to face death, but afraid of leaving his family penniless if he did not survive. Halo House was founded in 2009 by Dr. Nathan Fowler, an oncologist at MD Anderson, his mother, Kathleen Fowler, and other friends and colleagues. After receiving its 501(c)(3) status in 2010, Halo House had its 1st fundraiser generating over $13,000. In 2011, Halo House welcomed families into their first two apartments and by 2016, had ten rental apartments and one condo. Construction began on a new 42,000 square foot facility and opened in May 2019. In 2022, we have provided over 50,000 days of housing to over 700 families.SpecialtiesHalo House Foundation enables access to lifesaving treatment at the Texas Medical Center by providing affordable fully-furnished apartments and a community of support to blood cancer patients and their caregivers.
