History
by the Greater Dallas Section of the National Council of Jewish Women, LIFT is now one of the largest and most widely respected adult basic education programs in North Texas. LIFT was founded in response to the concern over the illiteracy rate among adults in the Dallas area. The goal was to create and support an organization that would offer free and easily accessible classes so that functionally illiterate adults could learn to read and write in English. LIFT's early efforts were truly a community collaborative. The Frank Laubach Foundation for World Literacy, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital and The Dallas Morning News were also instrumental in the development of LIFT and its programs. In 1961, LIFT served 600 adult learners and has grown to serve over 3,500 adults annually. During our 53 year history, LIFT's programs have provided basic adult literacy, GED preparation, and ESL training to more than 55,000 low-literate adults.
