History
Desiring to create a stronger educated community, Bonnie Hopperton and Deborah Mitchell founded this organization to tutor adults needing help with basic reading skills free of charge. This has grown over time and now in addition to basic education skills, we offer advanced tutoring for adults seeking to earn their GED certification and teaching English as a Second Language to non-English speakers, still free of charge. We began in borrowed space from area churches and the public library. Then as the program flourished, we now have our own office location and classrooms, yet we still maintain individualized tutoring sessions.
Specialties
GOALS is a non-profit, tax exempt, adult literacy program that is dedicated to preparing adults, working at the high school level, who have not received a high school diploma, to earn a GED (General Educational Development) Certificate, providing Adult Basic Education to those reading below the sixth grade level and English as a Second Language for non-English speaking adults. We believe that the ability to read is critical to personal freedom and to the maintenance of a democratic society. Our society is dependent upon an informed citizenry, and the ability to read is necessary to be informed. As our culture becomes more complex and dependent on technology, literacy becomes ever more basic to survival and the achievement of one's potential.
