A tale of tradition In a modest Mexican kitchen in 1959, three-year-old Dora watched as her mother made and sold homemade corn tortillas to their neighbors in Rio Grande Valley. As the business grew, so did Dora, and by the time she was eleven her mother shared with her the art of tortilla making. By the 1980s, however, her mother could not keep up with the family business. Talk of shutting down this family institution was quickly becoming a reality. Until, that is, their daughter Dora and her husband Uriel, stepped-up. Unwilling to let tradition die, they grabbed the reigns and kept the family business afloat through hard work, pain, perseverance and that one crucial ingredient - faith. The couple believed in reinvesting in the business, and by 1983 De Alba Tortilleria in San Benito was opened. After almost a decade of success, they opened in McAllen.
