Dallas Love Field DAL was initially the primary airport for Dallas, Texas until Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened in 1973. DAL Airport is situated about 6 miles from downtown Dallas. Love Field stays fairly busy moving about 8 million passengers annually. While being a secondary airport for the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area it is still a focus airport for Southwest Airlines.
Love Field opened in 1927 when Dallas purchased the land from the National Air Transport. Like many airports during World War II it was used as a training field for the US Army Air Forces. Until 1973 Dallas Love Field was the main airport serving Dallas, Texas, then the much bigger DFW Airport took that distinction.
Located just east of I-35E and south of the West Northwest Highway there is an array of parking options with over 7,500 spaces including short-term, long-term, garage and economy. There are two terminals (1, 2) at DAL with 19 gates total, all are connected by walkway. The four airlines serving Dallas Love Field are Southwest Airlines, United Express, Delta Connection and SeaPort Airlines flying to and from several domestic locations.
DAL Airport offers an array of dining, shopping and services for travelers. In terms of ground transportation there is public transportation via Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), rental cars, shuttles and taxis are available. If staying near the airport there are 19 hotel and motel options within a 3 mile radius including the Crown Plaza Hotel, Embassy Suites Dallas Love Field, and the Super 8 Motel Love Field.
