The Colorado River Municipal Water District was authorized in 1949 by the Texas legislature to provide water to the district's member cities: Odessa, Big Spring and Snyder, Texas. The district also has contracts to provide specified quantities of water to Midland, San Angelo, Stanton, Robert Lee, Grandfalls, Pyote and Abilene, Texas, through the West Central Texas Municipal Water District. The Colorado River District owns and operates three major surface water supplies on the Colorado River in west Texas, the full combined capacity of which is 1.2 million acre-feet. Additionally, it operates five well fields for water supply. The CRMWD also serves a number of nonmunicipal customers, including Chevron, Faskin Oil, Power Resources and Anadarko Petroleum Company.
