The Housing Authority of the City of Austin provides housing assistance to more than 18,000 residents. It owns and operates over 1,900 units of conventional public housing in nearly 20 development sites, including apartments, duplexes and single-family homes throughout Austin, Texas. The authority also provides a variety of youth and senior services, such as awareness classes, recreational activities, and health and safety programs. In addition, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin provides resident watch and safety programs. It also operates the Housing Choice Voucher Program, formerly referred to as Section 8, which is a federally funded program that helps subsidize rent payments for low-income families.
