The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, founded in 1927, is an independent, nonprofit organization that certifies obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States. ABOG is one of the 24 specialty boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. The board also functions in cooperation with the Residency Review Committee for Obstetrics-Gynecology and the Council on Resident Education for Obstetrics-Gynecology. The organization examines and certifies more than 1,700 obstetrician-gynecologists and subspecialists in maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility and gynecologic oncology annually. Additionally, more than 5,000 physicians are examined annually for the purpose of maintenance of certification. The board approves graduate medical education programs in the subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology. ABOG is located in Dallas.
