Saulsbury Map
Saulsbury is a town in Hardeman County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 99 at the 2000 census. It is located along State Highway 57 in southwest Hardeman County. Saulsbury is home to a grocery store, a post office, a volunteer fire department, two baptist churches, and a garage that opened in 2009. It also boasts a park (Peabody Park) situated between West Street and Church Street. Saulsbury is along the Norfolk Southern railroad.
The unusual spelling of the town's name can be traced back to two men named Burrell Sauls and Berry Futrell. When a newly completed railroad and depot were built a mile north of the town of Berlin, the depot became known as the "Sauls-Berry Depot." To be closer to the tracks and depot, the inhabitants of Berlin moved north to Saulsbury, incorporated in 1856.
On January 17, 1999, an F1 tornado formed just southwest of Saulsbury, and moved northeast until dissipating near Rogers Springs. One person was killed, four others were injured. Fourteen houses and mobile homes were destroyed, and twenty-seven others were damaged. Power lines and trees also sustained significant damage. As a result, the town of Saulsbury installed a tornado siren at the local fire station. The siren is the only one in the area, and is a great benefit to the town.
