Founded in 1827, the Memphis Police Department, also known as MPD, provides safety services for more than 683,800 citizens in an over 310-square-mile area of the City of Memphis in Tennessee. The department features a staff of nearly 2,050 employees and has helicopters, bicycles, horse patrols and dog squads. The Memphis Police Department includes an investigative branch that is responsible for reviewing the details of crimes, such as burglary, theft, domestic violence and sexual assault. In addition, it administers the Operation Blue CRUSH program. The investigative services branch works closely with other divisions and law enforcement agencies to solve crimes. The Memphis Police Department provides air support and harbor patrol services, as well as a crisis intervention team program.
