The Environmental Planning Office is responsible for the preparation of the environmental documents for federal- and state-funded transportation projects. It compiles and collates information on more than 20 social, economic and environmental issues, such as land use, farmland, energy, conservation, hazardous waste and floodplains. The office is operated by the Environmental Division, which is a part of the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The Environmental Division offers natural, social, historic and visual environment protection, preservation and enhancement services. The division also maintains the Natural Resources Office, which is responsible for assessing, preparing and acquiring environmental permits for transportation projects. It operates beautification and environmental policy and compliance offices.
