Back Yard Burgers opened its first restaurant in 1987 and its first franchised restaurant in 1988. It specializes in serving grilled 100 percent Black Angus beef burgers and charbroiled chicken sandwiches. The company had more than 170 restaurants operating in 20 states in 2005, most of which were franchised operations. It plans to increase the number of restaurants by more than 25 in 2006. Most Back Yard Burgers restaurants include a full dining room with a self-service beverage center and a single drive-through. Its menu also features seasoned or waffle fries, hand-dipped shakes, malts and freshly made lemonade. Back Yard Burgers also offers catering services. The company s headquarters is in Memphis, Tenn.
