Founded in 1921, Pennington County Jail is a detention center that is nationally accredited by the American Correctional Association. The jail houses more than 350 inmates. It houses pretrial, presentenced, and county- and state-sentenced prisoners. Pennington County Jail offers a variety of services for inmates, as well as provides medical and mental health services. In addition, the jail offers visitation and volunteer services. Its staff includes correctional corporal and officers, sergeants and lieutenants. The jail serves Pennington and Custer counties in South Dakota; the Bureau of Prisons; and marshals in the United States. Pennington County Jail maintains a location in Rapid City, S.D.
